I take frequent bike rides along Highway 90 going from town to town. They range anywhere from six to twenty miles round trip. Bicycling is an excellent form of exercise for all age groups. It can be a good option for older adults to consider.
Research articles state that bicycling is a good aerobic activity, meaning your heart and lungs get a good workout. They also point to increased cardiovascular fitness.
Other research points to increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved balance and coordination, weight loss, improved stair climbing, and improved mental health.
As we grow older, the aches and pains settle in. They make a person want to do less, which leads to more aches and pains and stiffness. It becomes an endless, vicious circle.
Keeping active and exercising may help in limiting the effects of the aches and pains associated with age. However, keeping active and exercising is good for people of all ages.
Bicycling can be a refreshing exercise, such as a ride along the beach or in a country setting, or around a nice urban area. A gym or fitness center is not always the right fit for everyone, and bicycling can be a nice alternative to them. If you have been inactive for a period of time or suffer health issues, you should get the okay from your doctor first before setting off. Once you get the ok, start enjoying the health benefits of bicycling!
